  1. A. GARCIA PRODUCTIONS PRESENTS HANG SON DOONG CAVE THE LARGEST CAVE IN THE WORLD

  2. HANG SON DOONG In April 2009, in the Phong Nha-ke Bang National Park en De Quang Binh province in Vietnam, an enormous cave was discovered. It measures 6.5 kilometers long, widths of 150 meters, and is 200 meters high in places. Forming part of twenty new caverns identified by a British exploration group, it is the largest known cave in the world. The subterranean river in the cavern stopped explorers from going further; the extent of the cavern can only be estimated using a flashlight. The cave will be the subject of further exploration. A local had discovered the cave in 1991, but he couldn’t remember just where it was. Around March and April of 2009, he assisted the explorers in crossing 10 kilometers of forest to get to the mouth of the cave. Given the difficulty in getting to the mouth of the cave, only scientists will have access to the discovery for the time being.

  4. Scientists from the British Cave Research Association, led by Howard and Deb Limbert, conducted an expedition to PHONG NHA-KE BANG from April 10-14, 2009.

  5. It takes six hours trudging through the jungle to arrive at the mouth of the cave.

  6. Afterdescending a large chamber, itisnecessary to cross twosubterraneanrivers to get to the main passageway of Doong Hang Fils. To giveyou an idea of the immense size of the space, look at the personwith a light-hat standing on the round hill in the lower center.

  7. Located in the PhongNha-KeBang, near the Loation border, the cavernforms part of a web of 150 caves in the AnamitaMountains. Many of the cavernsstill have not been explored.

  8. One of the rooms of the caverncouldaccommodate a New York skyscraper. There is a jungle IN the cavern. There are evenclouds.

  9. National Graphic sent sent a team to chart the cave in 2010. The magnificentphotographs of Carsten Peter werepublished in the January 2011 issue of the magazine.

  10. Explorerswerestunned by a giganticpetrifiedlimestone cascade shaped by water.

  11. The caverncontains dry ponds near the Garden of Eden in Hang Fils Doong. Theycontain an exceptional collection of spherical rocks, formed drop by drop over centuries, in the form of calcium crystalssurrounded by grains of sandthatgrowwith time.

  12. The principal room of Fils Doongis 5 kilometers long, is 200 metershigh, and 150 meterswide.

  13. The cave hadnever been explored, even by the localspartlybecause the entrance wasrathersmall in comparison to otherVietnamese caves (10 metershigh by 30 meterswide), but alsobecause the large subterranean river emits an erriesound.

  14. Sunken roof – mini-jungle 300 metersbelow the surface.

  15. A hugesun ray fallsinto the cave like a waterfal. In the foregroundis a giant stalagmite.

  16. When part of the jungle roof of the cave gave way long ago, itcreated a chasmwithitsownecosystembelow. A new species of insectwasfound in this area. It has no pigment and isblind. The plants have adopted to the change in climate.

  17. One of the openings.

  18. The chasmswerecreatedwhen the roof of the cave collapsed. The daylightenters the cave, creating unique ecosystems.

  19. The new room measures 200 meters long by 150 wide – approximatelytwice the previous record of Deer Cave in Malasia.

  20. This wideopeningwascreated by the torrential tropical rainsat the opening.

  21. A 300 metersbelow the jungle surface is a mini-jungle at the bottom of the chasm.

  22. After six kilometers of exploration, the route isobstructed by a gigantic calcite rock, cristened The Great Wall of Vietnam. |»

  23. Climbing « The Great Wall of Vietnam » is proof thatthisis the far end of the cavern.
