  1. Semantic Networks Concept Maps as Mindtools

  2. What are Semantic Networks? • Spatial Representations of Concepts • Intended to represent the knowledge structures that humans store • Consisting of nodes representing concepts and labeled lines representing relationships among them

  3. Why create Semantic Networks? • Engage learners in critical thinking • Allow learners to ORGANIZE ideas • They work as visual tools – key for our students! • Allow learner to constantly elaborate and refine concepts

  4. How Are Semantic Networks Used as Mindtools? • Declarative Knowledge – objects, events, ideas that we know • Procedural Knowledge – how to use this information to solve problems • Structural Knowledge – understanding how these two things are interrelated and integrated

  5. How Can They Be Used? • Study Guides • Knowledge Integration Tools • Planning Tools

  6. Study Guides • Highlighting and Re-Reading Does Not Work! • Allows them to Engage With the Ideas Rather Than Try to Memorize • Students Must Come Up With Nets on Their Own to be Effective

  7. Knowledge Integration Tool • Acts as Self-Assessment Tool • Works Towards Higher-Order Thinking • Allow Students to Focus on Issue at Hand

  8. Planning Tool • Useful for Both Teachers and Students • Useful for Organizing Essay Writing • Great for Studying for Test • Can Work for Group Projects Within the Classroom • Can Help Teachers Plan Lessons, Units, and Assessements

  9. Working on Construction of Nets • Make a plan – what is your goal for the net? • Identify important concepts – focus on words, phrases and key ideas • Create, Define, and Elaborate Nodes – defining the relationship between ideas • Continue to Expand the Net • Student Reflection

  10. What Makes A Good Net? • Number of nodes indicates breadth of net • Are the relationships formed clear and descriptive? • How accurate is the information?
