Background • Newest optical disk format • BDA: a group of the world’s leading consumer electronics, personal computers and media manufacture • Developed & designed to enable recording, rewriting, and playback of HD videos • 5 times the storage capacity of DVDs • Uses a blue-violet laser instead of red • Same dimensions as a DVD or CD • Hard-coating technology • Durabis

History of Blu-Ray • 1980s  Introduction of CD’s with 650MB’s of storage capacity • 1990s  Introduction of DVD’s with 10x increased capacity • High Definition (HD) experience  Competition between Sony and Toshiba began • Sony Blu-Ray Disks (25G Storage space) • Toshiba  HD-DVD (15G Storage Space) • February 2008  Toshiba announces that they would no longer manufacture HD-DVD players or drives • Now, Blu-Ray is the new generation of HD technology

  5. Benefits • Higher capacity on a single disc • Dual layer  50 GB; 10 layers  250 GB • High Definition video (and more) • HD = 1080 vs. SD = 480 • Interactive features for Blu-Ray disc players • Java coded menus vs. pre-rendered MPEG menus • Connect to Internet

Criticisms • Price • Most Blu-Ray players cost $200-400 at best • In comparison, HD-DVD players sold for $100 and several DVD players are under $100 • Only really worth it for HDTV • Profile Confusion • Older Blu-Ray player models (1.0, 1.1) can’t handle certain special features that come on discs • Not the case with HD-DVD

Opinion • Facts • Blu-ray disks are superior to HD-DVDs • Blu-ray disks are much more expensive than regular DVDs • Quality of picture depends on disk, player, and TV • Conclusion • It’s still too expensive to convert to Blu-ray for the average consumer • Increase in quality is not worth the increase in price • Blu-ray disks will eventually take over DVDs
