Abstract • Security is a broad topic that may require a common/coordinated approach across multiple WGs as the WGs address operation in TV white spaces • White Space SG should identify aspects of security which may need to be addressed by the 802 WGs for proper operation in TV white spaces • White Space SG should identify aspects of security which may need to be common across WGs for operation in the TV white spaces Alex Reznik, InterDigital
Security – A Functional View • Topics that came up on SG calls/reflector as potentially crossing WG boundaries within 802 • Data Integrity and Authentication • Already addressed by various WGs • Is this sufficient??? • Device Integrity and Authentication • Traditionally considered outside the scope of 802 • Device integrity impacts ability to support co-existence modes which require trustworthy air interface operation • Device security may not only need to be supported but may also benefit from combining with and/or binding to link-layer security to ensure proper air interface operation • Low-Layer Security • Currently not specified by any WG’s • Potentially needed to support proper operation of cognitive radios • Location and Measurement Security • Ensuring authentic reporting of location and spectrum measurement Alex Reznik, InterDigital
Security - An Architectural View • Currently each WG specifies its own approach • A shared philosophy based on 802.1x is used but not formally enforced • 802.22 identified a need for a “cognitive radio security” function separate from a “traditional security” function • Should SG make a recommendation on a need for common 802 security architecture • If so, is the current 802.1x approach sufficient or do we need to look beyond it (e.g. to IETF) • Do we recommend that a subset of security identified as “cognitive security” be addressed by a separate architectural entity • If so, what would be the specific aspects addressed by this entity? • Should this entity become a common one across multiple WGs? Alex Reznik, InterDigital
Possible Next Steps • Generate security consensus/issues slides for the tutorial addressing • Aspects of security to be addressed for TV White Spaces – both agreed on and potential • Where each of these should be addressed: in the WGs; at the 802 level; outside of 802; or as a regulatory specification • Whether the WGs need to coordinate their activities and how this may be accomplished Alex Reznik, InterDigital
