Overweight, Obesity, and Mortality: NIH-AARP Study • 527,265 (313,047 men and 214,218 women) 50 to 71 years old at time of enrollment • Maximum follow up of 10 years • 61,317 deaths (42,173 men and 19,144 women) • 186,000 men and women had never smoked, were middle-aged, and did not have coronary artery disease • 20% to 40% higher risk of death in overweight healthy middle-aged individuals who had never smoked • 2 to 3 times greater risk of death in healthy obese middle-aged individuals who had never smoked Adams KF et al.
