  3. President Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Speech (March 4, 1865) • http://www.wildwestweb.net/cwdocs/secondinaugural.html • This was an inspirational speech written to encourage the American population in their feat to unite a divided country.

  4. Confederate Law Authorizing the Enlistment of Black Soldiers (March 23, 1965) • http://www.history.umd.edu/Freedmen/csenlist.htm • This document was written to legally verify an act developed by Congress to allow the enlistment of black slaves in the Confederate South.

  6. POINT OF DIVERGENCE • President Abraham Lincoln is assassinated on April 15, 1865 by John Wilkes Booth in Ford’s Theater in Washington, DC

  7. EVENT ONE: Poor Man’s Revolt (May 24, 1885) • The South falls back into their former “planter aristocracy”, creating a large socioeconomic divide within the Southern states • Rich keep getting richer, while poor keep getting poorer as time goes on

  8. EVENT TWO: Slavery drags on, abolished during WWI (1917) • Slavery continues throughout the 19th century and into the start of the 20th century • Slavery is only ended in 1917 when the US enters WWI because black soldiers are needed and must be given basic rights as citizens to fight

EVENT THREE: Civil Rights Movement does not happen, Blacks are still facing extreme discrimination today • The Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s just simply does not happen • Small and very unsuccessful attempts are made by African-Americans to gain equality, usually resulting in death • John McCain becomes the 44th President of the United States, as Barack Obama does not run

  10. TODAY’S WORLD • America is a very segregated country, with few opportunities for African-Americans. Recently, African-American groups have formed to participate in peace rallies to promote equality. • The country is still recovering from the economic depression of the Southern states, and is in constant recession.
