  2. I. A model of Faith and Trust: the Annunciation. • Biblical passages of Mary’s life begin in Nazareth. • Annunciation- Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was to birth the son of God. • Joseph was angry with Mary because he didn’t believe she was having a child conceived by the Holy Spirit.

  3. II. An example of Charity and Outreach: The Visitation • Mary told her cousin Elizabeth she was having a child. Elizabeth was also pregnant with a child. This child was John the Baptist, Jesus cousin.

  4. III. A witness of Faithfulness: Staying with Jesus • Mary and Joseph raised Jesus in a loving, prayerful home. • Mary encouraged those in the expression after Jesus ascension to help them keep their Faith. • Assumption- Mary was brought into heaven, body and soul.

  5. IV. Immaculate Conception • Mary’s preservation from original sin, full of grace and holiness. • Immaculate Conception- December 8th ( Holy day of obligation).

  6. V. Virgin Mary • Jesus was born from a virgin (Mary) conceived with by the Holy Spirit. • Jesus birth is beyond human understanding.

  7. VI. Mother of God and Mother of the Church • Mary is the “Mother of the Church”. • “Theotokos”- expresses the truth- means “God-Bearer” or “ Birth-giver of God”. • When Jesus was dying on the cross he established that Mary is our mother. • He told John “Behold your Mother” and he told Mary, “Mother behold your son.”

  8. For Review Questions 1. Name 3 ways that the Holy Spirit brings needed gifts to the Church. • Substance, or “nature” or “essence” • Person- distinctions among “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” • Relation- says “Father, Son and, Holy Spirit” are distinct.

  9. 2. What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit? Why are they given to individuals and to the church as a whole. • Because individuals make up the whole Church. 3. What are the Charisms? How do these gifts help the church? • A charism is a spiritual gift given by God to individuals to help build up and strengthen the Church

  10. 4. Name the twelve fruits of the Holy Spirit. • Charity • Joy • Peace • Patience • Kindness • Goodness • Generosity • Gentleness • Faithfulness • Modesty • Self-Control • Chastity

  11. 5. What are two ways that the Catechism of the Catholic Church says that the Holy Spirit works actively in the Church. • The many gifts and ministries that build up the Body of Chris, the Church. • The Sacraments , both words and symbols, which put us in contact with the Risen Lord.

List and briefly describe common symbols of the Holy Spirit. • Fire- gives light like Jesus gives light to our Life. • Tongues of Fire- Pentecost. • Anointing with Oil- Baptism, Confirmation, and Anointing of the Sick all involve Anointing with Oil. • Water- Represents life and death, we need water to live but too much water can cause flood and tragedy. • Laying on of Hands- Jesus healed through touch. • Dove- symbol of the Holy Spirit.
