What’s the CPV • CPV is the abbreviation of concentration PV. • It utilizes optics to concentrate the sunlight to the CPV cell to generate power. • The purpose of CPV is to reduce the cell’s area and the cost of PV module.
The concentration factor of CPV is defined by the ratio of the area of the optics and the cell . For example a 20X CPV module, the ratio is 20. CPV generally can be divided into three grades by concentration factor C: Small C=2~100X ,Middle C=100~300X, Large C>300X. Basic conception of CPV
Structure of the CPV system • The CPV system includes three sectors: • CPV module • CPV tracker • Inverter
CPV module • Optics • frenesel lens • Cell • Si based: 2~300X • GaAs based: above 500X • Frame and heat dissipation
CPV STATUS1 • CPV is not a new technology, and about as old as the first activities in terrestrial photovoltaics. The first concentrator system was developed in the mid 1970’s by Sandia Labs in the USA. • CPV is suitable for middle and large systems. With the PV market rapidly expanding, a number of companies are starting to commercialize CPV systems.
CPV STATUS2 • CPV is important in the EU and USA’s Solar PV strategic plan .(It can be found in the EU’s SRA and USA DOE) • CPV is launching to the PV market and will enter into market in volume at 2010. (From USA DOE’s high efficiency cell plan.) • IEC62108 is a new standard for CPV published Dec. 2007.
CPV Market Trend 《PHOTON International April 2007》,P123 “X marks the spot –New investment and demonstrations back concentrating PV’s commercial push”)
CPV Cost benefit From the above data, we can see CPV can reduce cost down to about half of the flat panel.
