  2. Bellwork What do each of the four (4) diamonds: Yellow, Red, Blue, and White in the MSDS safety diamond represent?

Objectives • Explain why warning signs in labs are symbol heavy • List and explain purpose of preventative safety equipment • List and explain purpose of responsive safety equipment • Explain what to do if an incident occurs • Draw an accurate floor plan of their classroom lab safety equipment locations

  4. Terminology • Preventative – Used to reduce the risk of an accident and avert exposure. • Responsive – Used when an incident has occurred to minimized damage and contain exposure

  5. Have You Seen These? What do these tell you?

  6. Lab Signs and Symbols What do these sign tell you? Do you think there is a need to have universal symbols for cautioning people? Why? Come up with three (3) reasons.

  7. Safety Symbols in the Lab Here are examples of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and Globally Harmonized System (GHS) safety symbol you will see in the lab.   8. Safety Equipment In The Lab Two (2) types: Preventative – Used to reduce the risk of an accident and avert exposure. Responsive – Used when an incident has occurred to minimized damage and contain exposure The number one purpose of all types of safety equipment is to prevent human injury and loss of life.

  9. Preventative Safety Equip. in the Lab List three (3) pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE). In addition to these the lab is out fitted with other equipment. We ALWAYS use preventative equipment. Goggles, Aprons, and Gloves Safety Signs Fume Hood Used to contain & evacuate fumes/ gasses

Respirators Absorbent Station Pads Hand Wash Station http://phc.amedd.army.mil/topics/workplacehealth/ih/Pages/RespiratoryProtection.aspx Used to keep contaminants from entering respiratory system Helps keep accidental spills/ drips contain and easy clean up Insure we do not transfer contaminates out of the lab

  12. What To Do if an Incident Occurs Spill a biological or chemical on hands: Immediately wash with Soap and water for 15min, lab partner should notify instructor immediately. Spill or splash a biological or chemical on face or in eyes: Immediately rinse out in eye wash station until instructor says to stop. Lab partner should help you over to station then get instructor. Spill or splash a biological or chemical all over body: Immediately remove all clothes except undergarments and rinse under safety shower until instructor says to stop. Lab partner should get instructor.

  13. What To Do if an Incident Occurs Spill Chemicals or Biologicals on lab bench or floor: Take care of your body first if it contacts you. Notify others around you and instructor. Clean up. Fire: Notify instructor Pull fire alarm if instructed and prepare to evacuate Gas or toxic fume leak: Notify instructor Prepare to evacuate room

  15. Lab Safety Map and Locations Using an entire page in your lab book, sketch a floor layout of the lab as is looking down on it. Include all permanent structures: doors, benches, tables, cabinets, fume hood, etc. Now, locate all of the safety equipment we talked about and draw it into your layout.
