Ancient Africa. BY : T.J., Ben and Dylan. Religion. Ancient Africans were polytheistic. They believed in forces of nature with divine spirits. They influenced forces of nature by rituals and ceremonies. Africans believed that their ancestors could warn, help or punish them.

Religion • Ancient Africanswere polytheistic. • They believed in forces of nature with divine spirits. • They influenced forces of nature by rituals and ceremonies. • Africansbelieved that their ancestors could warn, help or punish them. • Many local practices were absorbed by Christianity and Islam.
Religion • Earliest evidence of religion in Africa is in Egypt. • The people of west Africa were more monotheistic. • Polytheism was predominant in north Africa where the Phoenician and Greeks and the Romans conquered and introduced their own gods.
Religion • Rome's emperor converted many to Christianity. • In the late 600’s A.D Islam came to Africa • 100 years later, most of north Africa had converted toIslam. • South of the rain forest, the original religions stayed.
Art • The African type of art was based on visual imagery, social purpose and spiritual beliefs. • They used many different types of materials to create some great pieces of art. • Some of their works were crafted with bronze, wood, and ivory. • They used art for religious purposes, making carved statues and wooden masks of their gods.
Art • Art helped the bond within the community grow stronger. • Throughout Africa, there are different tribes with different kinds of art which were unique to their actions. • Most pieces of art were art forms of human or animal subjects.
Literature • Written language in parts of Africa was influenced by Islam. • Professional poets recited stories more than they wrote them. • Poets were called Griots • Oral literature created a sense of community and common values.
Literature • African literature was mainly oral. • Past from one generation to the next through memorizing and acting. • Many folktales were usually told during the night, that featured both humans and animals. • Literacy in Arabic came to Africa with the introduction of the Islamic religion.
