Indian Institute of Astrophysics a premier Institute for Research & Development in Astronomy & Astrophysics EXOPLANET EXOPLANETS: Planets outside our Solar System • More than 800 Exoplanets have been found. • Half of them orbits around Sun -ike stars. • Many Exoplanets are giants like Jupiter or Neptune. • Some relatively lightweight exoplanets are also known and it is found they outnumber giant ones. • Tens of billions of exoplanets exist in Milky-Way alone. • Some exoplanets are also found orbiting brown dwarfs. • Detection of Exoplanets • Gravitational tug of war between planet & star cause Doppler shift in light coming from Star. • Transit of planet in front of parent star causes slight decrease in starlight. • A few planets are imaged by the largest telescopes by nulling of starlight. • Some exoplanets may have suitable environment for existence of life, and a search is on.
