File • A file stores bits of related information. • It can be written and read by computer programs and is usually stored in a file system. • Files are usually stored in folders. • A file path is the address where a file is stored on a computer.
Saving Files Saving to My Documents • Select File>Save As • Select a file name: • Fewer than 260 characters (Use a short, descriptive name.) • Do not use these characters: \ / ? : * " > < | • Select a file type manually in the “Save as Type” drop-down list, or • Accept the default file type.
File Paths on a Computer This file path is presented as seen on Windows XP. • C:\ is a drive, also known as the root directory. • WR Documents is a folder. • Flash Movies is a subfolder. • my_flash_movie.swf is a file in the Flash Movies folder. • .swf is a file extension: Shock Wave Flash. • \ or / is seen as a separator depending on the operating system.
File Paths on a Computer This file path is presented as seen on Windows Vista and Windows 7. • The user name precedes “Documents.” • Documents is a folder. • Verbatim Files is a subfolder. • HP 6000 is a subfolder. • Haywood is a subfolder. • Reading is a subfolder. • This is the path to the file “America the Beautiful.”
File Paths on a Computer • The path directs the user to open the user account. • In the Documents folder, find the Verbatim Files folder. • In the Verbatim Files folder, find the HP 6000 folder. • In the HP 6000 folder, find the Haywood folder. • In the Haywood folder, find the Reading folder. • The file you need is in the Reading folder.
File Paths on the Internet • When an HTML file in development is opened on the Internet, a file path is created. • C:\ is the root folder on the user’s computer. • “index.html,” the index page of the web page can be found by following the folder structure. • Users>(User Name)>Documents>Verbatim Files>HP 6000>QTL Work>Recent MaWD>Presentation Flash Drive>Days_3_4>3.02 Resources>Web Site Project> • This path creates an absolute link to the index file.
File Management • File management is the use of computer software to create an organizational structure of documents, files, and folders stored on a computer.
Local Storage • It is common to store files in My Documents or Documents. • Documents are often arranged by description, date or application. • Folders are created to sort files. • It is important to backup important files.
External Storage • CD-ROM discs are recordable plastic disks that hold about 650 MB of data. • Digital Video discs are recordable disks that hold a minimum of 4.7 GB of data and are designed for multimedia. • Blu-ray discs are recordable disks that store 25-50 GB of data and are designed for high-definition video.
External Storage continued • USB drives are easily portable drives that store 1-64 GB of data. • External hard drives are usually connected to a USB port on a computer. They have large storage capacity and are used as portable backup devices.
Saving Files continued • Saving to CD, DVD, BD, or External Hard Drive: • Different software programs installed on a computer have different save procedures. • Open the program and follow instructions. • Saving to a USB drive: • Select File>Save As and navigate to the drive. • Name the file and click Save. • To remove the drive: • Close associated files, right-click the drive in My Computer, and select “Safely Remove.”
