Need a model of Authority record base on MARC21 Format: • To accommodate CJK script headings • To accommodate additional heading(s) to meet the bilingual characteristics of the local community
HKCAN ProjectHong Kong Chinese Authority (Name) • Initiated in 1999 by six academic libraries • Became a cooperative project in 2001 Aims: • To build a Chinese name authority file with CJK scripts that meet the need of the bilingual community. • To improve and streamline authority control operations, to achieve “Better”, “Faster”, “Cheaper”. • To participate in regional and global cooperative activities on authority work.

HKCAN XML version • October 2003 - HKCAN Host Institution (CUHK) agreed to allocate existing manpower to develop new software for HKCAN Database (XML version). • Searching can be done in simplified or traditional Chinese characters or in pinyin form
New XML version 2003 • Supports Unicode • Options to export in text, MARC format; (to include XML format in near future) • Support CJK index and phrase searching irrespective of input characters in simplified or traditional; • Support Z39.50 Protocol and interactive transfer to INNOPAC system • OAI-PMH compliance (next enhancement)

To search for author in Chinese character, system will prompt user to search his English form as “Equivalent Heading”
Since “Chan, Jackie” is NOT used, system will prompt user to see his authorized English form “Cheng, Long” & also his “Equivalent Heading” in Chinese.

Special features of HKCAN XML software • Uses Unicode UTF-8 to store Chinese characters • Uses EACC code to store MARC format records • Follows MARC XML structure • Records can be exported in MARC format (Chinese characters are stored in EACC or UnicodeUTF-8)
HKCAN XML – Special features • Records can be uploaded toINNOPAC individually or by large batch • Records display options – records can be displayed in MARC or text format • User authentication – can be controlled by user name & password OR via IP address • Operate under XML environment • Records can be updated under management mode before downloading • Offers functions to collect statistical data

The Joint University Librarians Advisory Committee (JULAC) of Hong Kong creates and maintains the Chinese Name Authority File, which is expected to grow at a rate of 8,000 to 10,000 records a year. Access the file using the menu item: Authorities, Search, Chinese Name Authority File.
