2. Agenda: Objectives;
What is PPE;
When to use PPE;
PPE General Requirements;
How to select PPE;
Eye Protection ;
Head Protection ;
Foot Protection ;
Hand Protection ;
Hearing Protection ;
Respiratory Protection ;
PPE Signage;
3. Objectives:
By the end of this course you be able to:
Define the meaning of PPE;
Understand when to use PPE;
Identify the suitable PPE for different hazards;
4. What is PPE? PPE is all equipment (including clothing for the protection against the weather) which is intended to be worn or held by a person at work and which protects them against one or more risks to their health or safety
5. When to use PPE?
PPE is the last resort (as control measure), because:
Provides individual protection;
Does not control risk at source;
Improper use will make it useless;
Consider the use of PPE if it is not possible to apply the other primary control measures:
Engineering controls (machine guard);
Procedural Controls (PTW, Written Instructions, Training);
PPE can be used in conjunction with other control measures
6. PPE General Requirements: PPE should:
Be appropriate for the risks;
Take account of ergonomic requirements;
Be capable of fitting user;
Be effective in controlling risks involved;
Be designed as per recognized standard;
7. PPE General Requirements:
In general the PPE should be selected based on the hazard you are facing & on which part of your body this hazard will impact.
WHAT IS THE HAZARD & WHICH PART WILL BE AFFECTED
8. Eye Protection PPE:
Hazards:
Chemicals/splash;
Radiation;
Dust;
Projectiles;
Welding (Radiation);
PPE:
Spectacles (side pieces);
Goggles (full enclosure);
Face shields (face & eye);
9. Head Protection PPE:
Hazards:
Flying objects;
Falling objects;
Impact against fixed objects;
PPE:
Hard hat (Helmet);
Bump Cap;
10. Foot Protection PPE:
Hazards:
Falling objects / moving objects;
Sharp objects;
Extreme temperature;
Slippery surfaces;
Chemicals;
PPE:
Safety Shoes (Different Types)
11. Hand Protection PPE:
Hazards:
Rough handling;
Sharp objects;
Chemicals;
Extreme temperature;
PPE:
Safety Gloves (Different Types);
Gauntlets;
12. Hearing Protection PPE:
Hazards:
Noise (80db-A)
PPE:
Ear muff;
Ear Plug;
13. Respiratory Tract Protection PPE: Hazards:
Airborne contaminants like:
Dust (fine solid particles);
Fumes (heating metals);
Gases;
Vapours (heating of liquid);
Oxygen deficient environment;
PPE:
Respirators:
Designed to purify air by inhaling it through a medium which removes the contaminants
Breathing Apparatus:
Supplies pure air from uncontaminated source.
14. Respiratory Tract Protection PPE Cont.: Types of Respirators:
Filtered Face-piece Respirator (dust mask);
Half mask Respirators;
Full face respirators;
Types of Breathing Apparatus:
Fresh air hose apparatus:
Provide air from clean source depends on natural inhalation force to suck it (short distance).
Compressed airline apparatus:
Provide air from clean source by using compressor (long distance).
Self-contained apparatus:
Provide clear air from oxygen cylinder. (limited time)
15. PPE Signage: For PPE we use mandatory safety signs which are colored blue & white (conveyed message must be done)
