  1. Status on the PS/SPS  MERIT (nTOF11) interface I. Efthymiopoulos, A.Fabich CERN AB-ATB, Switzerland http://cern.ch/proj-hiptarget ABIC, February 2006 I.Efthymiopoulos, A.Fabich, CERN

  2. Introduction • Project webpage: http://cern.ch/MERIT • See also • EDMS “MERIT experiment” • presentation at 32nd ABIC by I.Efthymiopoulos • Experiment presented to AB safety committee on 25th Jan. 06 • ISIEC available • Interface MERIT to PS/SPS • Beam line • N2 exhaust • Power supply, power line I.Efthymiopoulos, A.Fabich, CERN

  3. Ventilation bat 806 • N2 exhaust • Beam line • Power supply/line to solenoid I.Efthymiopoulos, A.Fabich, CERN MERIT

  4. Beam line • No modifications to TT2 line • FTN beam line • Displacement/installation of quadrupoles downstream of shielding • Causes possible power cable installation to bat. 263 • Not urgent, can be down in shutdown 06/07 • Cut/stop TT2/FTN vacuum at shielding • install beam window just downstream of shielding. I.Efthymiopoulos, A.Fabich, CERN

  5. and repeat B-field Solenoid temperature Proton intensity The MERIT cycle The solenoid is operating at 80 K. A power ramping takes place about every 30 minutes. • Repetition rate is limited by the cooling process of the solenoid. • A few seconds B-field ramping • 20++ minutes for cooling procedure I.Efthymiopoulos, A.Fabich, CERN

  6. N2 exhaust • Principle of operation agreed with SC/RP and SC/GS • Release of 200 liters LN2/ 30 minutes at ambient temperature • 1400 m3 N2 gas/hour to a total ventilation of 27000 m3/hour • EDMS 700153 • Including activated LN2 of up to 1 liter/beam cycle • Delayed release by >2 minutes after beam to reduce short-lived isotopes • EDMS 700178 and 697857 • Currently installation of exhaust line in TT10 and TT2 • Layout agreed on with A. Spinks, N. Gilbert, G. Robin, C. Lacroix • Completed before TT2 closure at end of February • Operation of LN2/N2 system starts in late autumn 2006 • Impact on TT10 operation • Portable ODH monitoring required • Definition and signalization of areas concerned to be finalized • MERIT alarm from TT10 ventilation and radiation monitors to be installed I.Efthymiopoulos, A.Fabich, CERN

  7. Power supply, power line • Transformer/Converter installed at bat. 193 • Refurbishment during spring 2006 • AC cabling (18kV to transformer to converter) • Building 193 only • Will be done in autumn 2006; AD shutdown • DC • Currently ongoing • Completed before 24th February (TT2 closure) • Safety coordinator I.Efthymiopoulos, A.Fabich, CERN
