Practical applications of LE CHATLIER’S PRINCIPLE. 1. Blood PH. BLOOD CONTAINS DISSOLVED CARBONIC ACID IN EQUILIBRIUM WITH CO 2 & H 2 O THE REMOVAL OF CO 2 CAUSES THE FORWARD RXN TO BE FAVOURED, REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF CARBONIC ACID TO KEEP THE BLOOD Ph WITHIN A SAFE RANGE.

1. Blood PH • BLOOD CONTAINS DISSOLVED CARBONIC ACID IN EQUILIBRIUM WITH CO2 & H2O • THE REMOVAL OF CO2 CAUSES THE FORWARD RXN TO BE FAVOURED, REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF CARBONIC ACID TO KEEP THE BLOOD Ph WITHIN A SAFE RANGE
CARBONATED BEVERAGES • SOFT DRINKS ARE CARBONATED UNDER HIGH PRESSURE TO CREATE THE FOLLOWING EQUILIBRIUM SYSTEM: CO2(g) CO2(aq) + heat When a bottle of soda is opened, the pressure above the CO2 drops & CO2 bubbles out of solution. If the bottle is left open for long periods of time, the pop will go “flat” due to the reduced pressure.
Other applications • Chicken eggs • Hemoglobin production & altitude • Eyes adjusting to light • Supercharged & turbocharged engines • Weather indicators • Rechargeable batteries
