Music provides students with a means of self -expression. Self-esteem is a by-product of this self-expression.
Music performance teaches young people to conquer fear and to take risks to develop their full potential.
Here at HES, we play… • Keyboards • Handbells • Recorders • Guitars • Orchestral Strings
Keyboards • Beginning in 2nd Grade, students begin to study keyboard fundamentals, practice various rhythms, learn to play triads, explore electronic sounds, and create accompaniments. • In 4th grade, students add to their keyboarding skills such things as melodic notation, harmony studies, and performance.
Handbells • As part of our county-wide Talent Pool program, our school invites qualifying students from Kindergarten – Third Grade to participate in a number of specialty courses once a month. • The Music Talent Pool students are invited to participate in the HES Percussion Ensemble using various types of bells and xylophones.
RECORDERS In 3rd grade, students will apply their music reading skills to a wind instrument – the RECORDER. They will learn fingerings and duration techniques to help them play simple melodies from the treble clef while working toward performances for the student body. Recorders are provided by the school and issued to each student for the school year.
GUITARS In 5th grade, students will apply their music reading skills to a stringed instrument – the GUITAR. They will learn strings, chords, and fret locations for notes. They will play simple melodies and chords from the treble clef while working toward performances for the student body. Guitars are shared among all 5th grade classes.
Pickin’ & Grinnin’
STRINGS Here at HES, all upper grade students are offered the opportunity to participate in the Breckinridge County After-school Strings Program. Students may play a violin, viola, or cello in a grade-level orchestral ensemble. They will apply the note reading skills they learn in music to their preferred instrument, while learning strings, fingerings, bowing techniques, as well as playing in a group. Students may advance in the program as they progress to high school. Currently our program has participants in 3rd – 9th Grade, and we’re still growing! Instruments may be borrowed from the Music Room one day per week during participation in the program.
