2. Gateway to the Skies • Students from Wantagh Elementary School learned that the Long Island area has hosted some of the most famous aviators in history. • Many began their famous flights at Roosevelt Field, in Uniondale, NY, now a shopping mall. • Five of the most internationally famous aviators are linked to the NYC area.

Charles Augustus Lindbergh • Lindbergh’s parents owned a small farm in Minnesota • He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1902 • He loved animals • He opposed to voluntary American entry into WW II • He flew 50 combat missions • He was the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean • He won the American Medal of Honor for his brave flight • He died at the age of 72

4. Charles Augustus Lindbergh (1902-1974) • Helped to design his own airplane, The Spirit of St. Louis • Received a medal of honor from Governor Al Smith • Had a dog named Spot • Saw the Wright Brothers make their first flight

Howard Robard Hughes, Jr.  He was born in 1905 He died in 1975 at the age of 70 He was a famous businessman, aviator, and movie producer He was also an actor in one of his movies called The Racket He went to the famous Thacher School in Ojai, California He was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Houston Texas

9. Howard Hughes Takes Flight! Howard Robard Hughes,Jr. was born on December 24, 1905, in Houston, Texas. He was orphaned at 17, he dropped out of school to take control of the family business, the Hughes Tool Company, which had made a fortune thanks to a patent it held for a special oil-drilling bit. Hughes developed a passion for flying and founded his own aircraft company in the early 1930s. (The Howard Hughes Corporation) The Spruce Goose took flight in Long Beach, Long Island on November 21, 1947. The Spruce Goose was retired on April 5,1976 the same day he died in Houston, Texas.

13. Roscoe Turner • Born on September 19,1895 • Died on June 3, 1970 • Turner grew up in Corinth, Mississippi • He had a lion named Gilmore • He named his plane after his lion, Gilmore

14. Roscoe was born in Corinth, Mississippi. He applied for pilot training but was turned down.

15. Roscoe Turner He set a transatlantic airspeed record, 12 hours and 33 minutes, flying from New York to Burbank, California, on November 14, 1930.

17. Amelia Earhart Amelia Earhart was born in1897 and disappeared in 1937 At age 34, she flew a solo flight in May,1932 In early 1936, she planned to fly around the world using the longest route was 29,000 miles

18. Amelia Earhart • Amelia Earhart was the 16th woman to receive a pilot license. • Amelia received the nickname “Meelie” from her younger sister Muriel because as a young child, Muriel couldn’t pronounce Amelia’s name correctly.

Wiley Post Timeline • Wiley Post was born in Grand Saline, Texas (Van Zandt County), to cotton farmer parents William Francis and Mae Quinlan Post. • He wanted to become a pilot in World War I. • In 1913 at the county fair in Lawton, Oklahoma, Wiley Post saw his first airplane in flight.  • In 1921 he was arrested for armed robbery. He stole a car and was in jail for more than a year. • With money from the accident settlement, Wiley Post bought a Canadian-built JN-4 "Canuck." In June 1927 he married Edna Mae Laine. • In 1933, Post shattered his around-the-world record with a time of seven days, eighteen hours, and forty-nine minutes. After his record-breaking flights he experimented with high-altitude flying. He then died in 1935.

He was born near Grand Saline in Texas. • During WWI, Wiley Post was eager to become a pilot in the U.S Army Air Service (USAS). He somehow got out of training and no sites know why. Once again, Wiley Post was out of work. • In 1921, Wiley Post was arrested for armed robbery. He served more than a year in the Oklahoma State Reformatory. He was paroled in the summer of 1922.

More Wiley Post • In June 1927, Wiley Hardeman Post married Edna Mae Laine. • After losing control of his plane in flight on August 15, 1935, the aircraft crashed into Walakpa Lagoon near Point Barrow in Alaska trying to test the operational capabilities of the aircraft in a long-distance flight. Wiley died in the crash and over 1,000 mourners attended his funeral.
