What was the Administration and Justice Act? “An act for the impartial administration of justice in the cases of persons questioned for any acts done by them in the execution of the law, or for the suppression of riots and tumults, in the province of the Massachusetts Bay, in New England.” (From Primary Source Documents Pertaining to Early American History). This meant that because of the uproars and rebellion in Massachusetts, Great Britain established a court system in the Massachusetts Bay colony to deal with the uprisings. It said that if anyone makes an error or defect in the case, it will be taken to another colony, or to Great Britain, to be judged. Home
Why was the Administration and Justice act issued? There were a lot of offenses against the king and the authority in New England, commonly in Massachusetts so they had to develop a judicial system. Home
Where and when did this take place? The act was created May 20, 1774 in Britain and took effect on the first day of June in the same year. It applied to Massachusetts Bay. Home
Who was in charge of this, and who did it apply to? The act was created by British Parliament, enforced upon Massachusetts colonists, and controlled by a governor/ lieutenant appointed by Britain who runs the court. It said that all witnesses and prosecutors are free from blame for whatever they say in the court. Home
