Global Warming: • World temperature is increasing • The Earth’s climate greatly impacts world events:
Global Warming (Continued): • Glaciation (Ice Age): resulted from temperature dropping (only by 4°C) • 1000 AD: Vikings arrived and settled in Newfoundland because temperatures were getting warmer
The Greenhouse Effect • Gases in the atmosphere absorb some heat before it escapes into space. Online Animation: http://academics.rmu.edu/faculty/short/phys2610/phys2610-anim/greenhouse-effect/
The Greenhouse Effect (Continued) • Necessary for survival • Without greenhouse gases, temperatures would drop by33°C (This would kill all life on earth)
The Greenhouse Effect (Continued) • Too many greenhouse gases: • Less heat escapes, temperatures would increase too much (Results from human activity)
The Greenhouse Effect (Continued) • Types of Gases: Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, water vapours and halocarbons (all natural except for the halocarbons)
Carbon Cycle • Movement of carbon through plants, animals, water, soil, air & rocks.
Carbon Cycle (Continued) Halocarbons: Humans release extra carbon by burning fossil fuels. Carbon Sinks: Humans destroy areas that help eliminate carbon emissions (like forests)
Potential Effects • Precipitation • Increased rain in rainy areas (floods) • Decreased rain in dry areas (droughts) • Vegetation/economies/ wilderness will be destroyed as a result
Potential Effects (Continued) • Sea levels rise (melting glaciers) • Land gets flooded • Animals lose habitats (polar bears)
Potential Effects (Continued) • Homes are ruined (“weather refugees”) • Increase in extreme weather events • Increased spread of infectious disease • Increased deaths due to smog and extreme heat
