Growth of Distance Education Courses 1995- through 2015-16Data from the California Community Colleges • The California Department of Finance projects an increase of public higher education by 31% between 2005 and 2014. • The basis for the projection is the record of actual percentages representing distance education enrollments from 1998-2004. By 2015-2016, as much as 20% of system enrollment may be in distance education.
Online Teaching Awards Program Goals • Recognize online faculty for their teaching excellence and to encourage them to adapt new technologies to their course delivery. • Share ideas and best practices and pedagogy among college faculty.
2007 Awards Program • Eligibility • The course must have been approved for delivery using the developer’s college curriculum peer-review process. • At least two-thirds of the instruction must occur online. (Web-enhanced courses, in which most of the instruction occurs in the classroom, are not eligible.) • The course must meet Section 508 requirements for accessibility • Certification of copywritten permission for material in their course • Criteria • Need - 20 points • Interactivity and Community - 20 points • Use of Multimedia and the Internet-10 points • Assessment-15 pints • Commitment to accessibility -15p • Feasibility

2007 Awards Programs Winners • Karen Cox 1st place City College of San Francisco • ENGL:40 Advanced Composition • Cox online course had pleasing consistency on its design. Good rhythm of reading, discussions, writing and “on your own”. Varied assignments with an emphasis on freakonomics. Objectives present in each weeks learning material. • Well balance course. Good use of individual and groups discussions and outside resources. • Course easy to navigate, rich in content, encourages students to participate. • Lisa Harrison 2nd place City College of San Francisco • Lifespan Development Course • Clearly organized, about 10 links to outside sources. • Relevant assessments; appealing use of visuals • Interesting discussion topics, such as parenting styles and children of divorce. • www.cvc.edu/awards
2008 Competition • Mt San Jacinto -2008 Learning Objects • Model Course • Faculty to develop a new online course to serve as a model to peers in the CCC’s system • Course review by a panel of judges • Courses that have been approved by their colleges for online delivery, but that not yet been offered online. Digital Learning Objects • Learning objects will include “any digital resource that can be reused to support learning.” Examples of larger learning objects are websites that combine text and other media, digital videos, online simulations and java applets intended for college instruction. • MERLOT editorial group to review and evaluate each of the learning objects with regards to its quality of content ease of used and potential effectiveness as a learning tool.
