Cinémavérité By Victoria Emerson
What is Cinémavérité? Cinémavérité originates from France, it was developed in the 1960’s. Cinémavérité means ‘truth cinema’ and is supposed to represent the truth. Though more realistic than most types of Documentary, the shooting ratio of Cinémavérité films are usually very high, therefore meaning that not all the footage taken gets shown to the audience. Cinémavérité films are often made by filming interviews, conversations and other sound clips, then reinforcing the sound with relevant images and clips at a later time.
Who is Richard Leacock? Richard Leacock was responsible for separating sound from the footage recorded, and allowing the sound to synchronise with the film. He has been described as ‘The Father of Modern Documentary’, due to his involvement with the advances in non-fiction film technology. His efforts made a massive difference to the way in which Cinémavéritéfilms were created since.
