  2. Computer systems are vulnerable to many threats that can inflict various types of damage resulting in significant losses. This damage can range from errors harming database integrity to fires destroying entire computer centers.

  3. The common threat to computer and information system is computer viruses • Computer virus is a destructive computer program created with intention of damaging or causing irregular behavior to other computer programs

  4. Sources of Viruses • Computer contact with contaminated systems • Use of infected software • Fake games • Freeware and shareware

  5. Viruses symptoms • Unfamiliar graphics and messages appearing on the screen • Program taking more than usual to load or open • Less memory available than usual • Program files mysteriously disappearing • Files changing size without known reason • General change in computer behavior

  6. Solution • Use of Anti-Virus Software • Anti-virus software help prevent and remove viruses • They are software which should be updated regularly • Avoid contact with other computer systems and media such as storage devices

  7. Spyware • Sends information about you and your computer to somebody else. • Spyware is normally received as part of shareware or freeware downloaded from the web.

  8. Trojans • These are computer program that intend to disrupt and damage computer activities by sending information, perhaps even passwords onto a third party without you knowing.

  9. Spam • Unsolicited mail often promoting products of a dubious financial or sexual nature.

  10. Adware • puts advertisements on your screen. These take many forms including pop-ups, pop-under and advertisements that appear later, even if your browser is closed.

  11. Other computer threats include • Dust • Water • Theft • Electric shock and fluctuation
