What causes the “cracking” sound? • Joints (knuckles) are covered by a capsule… • In the capsule, synovial fluid is contained… • This lubricates bone surfaces… • Gases are continuously dissolved in this fluid. • One cracks a knuckle, the stretching of the capsule lowers pressure inside the joint, creates a vacuum • A“bubble” is created, which then bursts, creating a “popping” or “cracking” sound.
