Therulerofsuchasmallstate, Elis, wantedtoliveinpeacewithallneighbours. HewasagooddiplomatbecausehisnegotiationsweresuccessfulandEliswasrecognizedaneutralstate. Tocelebratethisachievement, heorganizedathleticgames. Inthebeginningthisfeastlastedoneday, butlaterawholemonthwasdevotedtoit. AllwarsandfeudswerestoppedbyspecialheraldswhorodeinalldirectionsofGreece. ThegameswereheldeveryfouryearsinOlympiaontheterritoryofElis. ThefirstgameswhichlaterwerecalledtheOlympicGameswereheldaboutathousandyearsbeforeourera.
UsuallytheOlympicGamesbeganbeforethemiddleofthesummer^BestathletesarrivedfrommanyGreekstatestoOlympiatocompeteinrunning, longjumps, throwingofdiscusandjavelinandwrestling. Inthecourseoftimefistfighting (boxing) andchariotraceswerealsoincludedintheGames. AllathletestookanoaththattheyhadbeenpreparingwellfortheGamesandpromisedtocompetehonestlyandkeeptherulesofthesacredOlympics. Theathletestookpartinallkindsofcompetitions. Winnerswerecalled «olympionics», theywereawardedolivewreathsandcupsofoliveoil. Thistraditionhassurvived.
. Inourtimesportsmenoftengetcupsandwreathsforwinningthefirstplaceinsportscompetitions. TheolympionicsofancientGreecebecameverypopular. Bestcraftsmenwerechosentomakehonourarycups, manypoetswroteandrecitedinpublicpoemsaboutthebestathletes. Sculptorsmadetheirstatueswhichwereputupatthebirthplaceofthewinners. TheOlympicGameswereaccompaniedbyartsfestivals. Poetsrecitedtheirpoems, singerssanghymnsdancersdancedandoratorspronouncedspeeches — allthisinhonourofthesacredGames. OnlymencouldtakepartintheOlympicGames. Womenwerenotallowedeventowatchthecompetitionsatthestadiumunderthefearofdeathpenalty. Therewasasingleexception, whenawomancoachedhersonandaccompaniedhimtothestadiuminmen'sclothes.
Magnificentstrongbodiesinspiredartistsandsculptors. Theypaintedwallpicturesandmadestatuesofmarbleandbronze, sonowwecanadmirethecorporalbeautyofancientandeternallyyoungdiscusthrower, javelinbearerandothers. TheOlympicGameshadbeenheldforaboutelevenhundredyears, untiltheemperorTheodosiusbannedthemforreligiousreasonsin 394 A. D
TherevivaloftheOlympicGamesbeganlongtimeafterwards, in 1892, whenayoungFrenchteacherPierredeCoubertinmadeapublicspeechbeforetheUnionofFrenchsportsclubsinParis. Atthattimemanypeopleinmanycountriespractisedvariouskindsofsportsandgames. Theywantedtomakefriendsandcompetewithsportsmenfromotherlands. PierredeCoubertinunderstoodtheimportanceofsportswhichunifiedpeoplesoftheworldandservedthecauseofpeacelikeinancienttime.
Onthe 23rd ofJune 1894 theInternationalCongressofamateursportsmenmadeanimportantdecision: torevivetheOlympicGamesandtoestablishtheInternationalOlympicCommitteewhichwouldberesponsiblefortheadministrationofthemodern-OlympicGames. ThefirstCommitteeconsistedof 12 members. Now 82 membersoftheInternationalOlympicCommitteecontroltheaffairsofallmembercountrieswhichjoinedtheOlympicmovement.
