Hose Testing
Truck Companies Commanders of Truck Companies shall coordinate with the Engine Company Captain to have their ladder pipe hose tested Hose Testing
Hose Inspection • Free of Debris • No evidence of mildew or rot • No cuts or • No damage to couplings or threads • Gasket in place Hose Testing
Hose Stenciling • Hose shall be stenciled in accordance with Article XX, Section 40 of the Fire Department Order book. • Company Commanders may wish to record and stencil hose the tour before the test in order to save time during the test, and have less out of service time. Hose Testing
Set Up • Wagon should be placed at a hydrant for adequate water supply Hose Testing
Set Up • Separate hose based on required test pressures – Do not mix groups when testing • 3” and smaller (250 psi) • 4” and larger (200 psi) Hose Testing
Set Up • Hose should be laid out in sections no longer than 300’ in straight lines without twists or kinks Hose Testing
Set Up Attach the hose sections to discharges away from the pump operator’s panel Attach the nozzle or an appliance to the other end of the hose Hose Testing
Set Up • Secure the hose closest to the discharge outlet with a strap or rope Hose Testing
Hose Slippage • Companies should use black magic marker to check for slippage • If mark moves more than ½” during the test, place the hose out of service Hose Testing
Hose Test • Place pump in service • Open intake valve • Charge hydrant • Open discharges Place pump in service Open intake valve Charge hydrant Open discharges Hose Testing
Hose Test • Leave the nozzle or appliance slightly open to allow the air to bleed out of the line • Close the nozzle or bleeder cap on the end of the hose once the air is completely out of the hose line being tested Hose Testing
Hose Test Raise pressure in the discharge to 45 psi and gate down the discharges to approximately ¼ of the way open. Note – This is done to minimize hose movement in the advent of a hose rupture Hose Testing
Hose Test • Check hose for obvious leaks and tighten any loose couplings. • Ensure webbing is secure Hose Testing
Hose Test • If there is obvious damage to hose • Stop test and replace hose Hose Testing
Hose Test • Defective hose is no longer being repaired by the Department and should be disposed of in accordance with Article XIX, Section 17 of the Order Book. Hose Testing
Hose Test Slowly raise the pump pressure to the desired test pressure and maintain for five minutes Remember to circulate the water from the tank to the pump and back again by opening the tank fill valve and leaving the tank to pump valve open Hose Testing
Hose Inspection • The hose should be inspected by walking down the left side of the hose (away from the pump towards the nozzle) • Walk approximately 15 feet away from the hose while it is under test pressure. (The hose should roll to the right if a rupture occurs). Hose Testing
Hose Burst • If the hose should burst during the test • Immediately lower the pressure • Shut down the line • Stop the test Hose Testing
Completing Test Once the five minutes is completed, slowly shut down the pump by bringing the engine RPM down to idle. Take the pump out of gear. Close the pump discharge gates Open the nozzle or appliance test cap. Allow the water to drain and inspect the hose coupling for any slippage. Hose Testing
Completing Test Any slippage found (more than 1/2 “) should be identified and the hose taken out of service. Record the results on the FD 122. Repack the hose. Companies are encourage to roll each section of hose prior to loading back on the wagon. Hose Testing
Recording Test Results Follow the link below on your I-Mobile computer in the wagon to display the Google form. After submitting each hose section, use the ‘back’ button to avoid having to re-enter information. http://tiny.cc/FireEMS_Form122_Hose_Test 9/28/2014 Hose Testing 25
