September 6th, 2013 Dear Dr. Groves, All of our second grade students have been studying the characteristics of living things. An important part of this curriculum focuses on relating these characteristics of living things to their environments. We have been discussing and studying this part of the curriculum in class, but the second grade team believes that, in order for our students to truly grasp what is being taught in class, they must experience these living things in the flesh. This is why we are proposing a field trip to the Children’s Farm in Palos Park. Our objective is that, through this trip, our students will be able to experience living things and their environments first-hand in a way that would be impossible in a classroom. They will be able to see how pigs keep cool in the heat by rolling in the mud, feel the warmth that a hen creates for her eggs with her feathers, listen to the sound of goats butting heads, etc. Before we leave the school, the students will complete the Know and Learn components of a KWL chart. When we arrive at the farm, we will all take a guided tour through all of the animals’ pens. A tour guide will inform the students about each specific animal and encourage them to have supervised, hands-on interaction with the animals. As we go from pen to pen, the students will write down information that they are learning about each animal and how it survives in its environment. After the tour, the students will be given the unique opportunity to take hay ride around the farm and regroup afterwards for lunch in a pavilion. Once we return to the school, the students will discuss what they have learned and complete an exit slip that requires them to analyze their experience at the farm. The tentative date of our trip is Friday, October 15th. Admission into the farm is free, so a cost of $7.00 per student will cover bus fees. Costs $$$ • Distance between St. Rays to The Children’s Farm: 24 miles; Round Trip: 48 miles • 48 x .96= $46.08 • Hourly total for buses: 36.48 x 5 hours= $182.40 • Total: $228.48 • Total: 228.48/46.08= $4.95 per student • Final Cost Per Student: $7.00 • (Extra money: $51.52 Will be used for students that cannot afford the trip)
Itinerary • 8:00 am: School begins. • 8:15-8:35 am: Complete the daily morning routine. • 8:50 am: Fill out the KWL Chart with the students regarding what they Know and Want to learn on field trip. • 9:15 am: Line up for the bus according to groups. • 9:30 am: Board the bus and depart from school. • 10:20am: Arrive at the Children's Farm. • 10:30 am: Enter farm and find tour guide • 10:45 am: Tour begins. The class stays together and students are in assigned groups with chaperones. • 10:45-11:45 am: Tour of farm: chicken/rooster co0p, goats, sheep, & pig pens, horse stable, and other animals. • 11:55 12:20pm: Lunch at picnic tables in pavilion. • 12:25 pm: Hay ride to pumpkin patch. • 1:00 pm: Begin loading the busses and depart from Children's Farm. • 1:40/1:50 pm: Arrive back at St. Rays School in Joliet • 2:00 pm: Follow-up activities; KWL Chart and exit slip. • 3:15 pm: School dismissal

Grouping Arrangements: • 40 students total with 3 teachers. • Three additional chaperones. • 4 Groups: Ratio 7 to 1. • 2 Groups: Ratio 6 to 1. • 6 Groups Total. • Teachers would formulate groups accordingly to behavioral issues.
Parent Letter 20 September 2013 Dear Parents, The second grade team has planned a field trip to the Children’s Farm in Palos Park, Il that will take place on Friday October 15th, 2013. The students have been studying the characteristics of living things and their relationship to the environment, and we believe that taking this trip will provide an invaluable opportunity for them to experience this topic in action right before their eyes! The students will be given a tour of many different animal pens by an experienced tour guide. In addition to learning about the animals from the guide, the students will be allowed to have supervised hands-on interaction with many of the animals. This will allow them to connect what they have learned in the classroom with real life as well as encourage them to develop new questions. After the tour, they will have the unique experience of taking a hay ride around the farm. We will be leaving the school at approximately 9:30 AM and returning at approximately 1:40 PM A fee of $7.00 per student must be paid via cash or personal check. Checks should be made payable to Cathedral of St. Raymond Catholic School. Students must submit the signed, unaltered permission slip and the payment to the teacher no later thanMonday, October 7th. ***Three parent chaperones will be needed in order for us to take this trip!
