  4. Personal check list 1. Did I include– all 11 sections? 2. Grammar/spell check/ clarity * Does it make sense? 3. (Acronyms)- 1st time—full 4. Remove advisors’ track changes

  6. 1(e) Research Methods • Instruments • What are the make, model and manufacturer? • Are they reliable and valid? • What variables do they measure? • Procedures • Collecting the data • When, where, how much time is required • The treatment (if any) • How long? How often? How intense? • The specific order in which steps will be taken • The timing (how long will each step take) • Instructions to participants

  7. 1(e) Research Methods - Stats • Inappropriate statistical methods are unethical. • Take some time to understand the specific statistics you intend to use.

  8. 1.(f) Rationale for Methods • Have other researchers used these methods. • If not, you must state why • Not enough time • No access to specific equipment • No money • Your method is more sound because…

  9. 9. Potential Costs for Participants • If indicated that possible harm could result, MUST indicate how you plan to decrease or avoid. • “what are you going to do about it?”

  10. Info. letter & Consent Form • Visually Appealing • Clear and concise (language)

  11. How long will the REB approval take? • HK REB Approval Process • Unclear writing -> Meaning? -> Ethical issues? • Longer review time • Sloppy work implies lack of thought in general which could apply to ethical considerations. • Approximately 1-2 weeks for first review • Then to UREB (tri-council policy)
