Paired Passages support literacy • Requires students to read, analyze, and comprehend two related texts and then use the information gathered from the texts to respond to a writing prompt by synthesizing the information in both texts This presentation and other resources can be found at STEMeducators.weebly.com
SCIENCE LITERACY RESEARCH • “A literate citizen should be able to evaluatethe quality of scientific information on the basis of its source and the methods used to generate it. Scientific literacy also implies the capacity to pose and evaluate arguments based on evidence and to apply conclusions from such arguments appropriately.” (National Science Education Standards, page 22) • *Scientific texts can be especially challenging for students because they often include figures, tables, data, and complex vocabulary that is lacking in other texts (Carol Lee and Anika Spratley 2009) • *Students need to develop strategies to comprehend and analyze complex science issues like global warming for example to develop critically literate skills, like real scientists ( Maria Grant and Diane Lapp 2011) This presentation and other resources can be found at STEMeducators.weebly.com
