  2. Why was this important? • Provided a getaway from the nations problems • Major developments in the arts contributed to 1920’s growth • Need for fun and leisure still exists, even with the country in a depressed state

  3. Growth of Radio • Families tuned in to programs for entertainment • Examples: Little Orphan Annie, Lone Ranger • Same idea as TV, beginnings of “couch potatoes” and family entertainment

  4. Sports • Baseball becomes “America’s Pastime” • Cheap tickets • Chance to see Heroes (Ruth, Gehrig, Dimaggio) • Negro leagues provide heroes for African Americans (Satchel Paige) • First night games are played
