  2. Rehearsing the Speech Rehearsing helps you internalize speech & develop confidence! • “Talk” your speech—never just read your speech!!! • Stage Fright is common—think positive (rehearsing eliminates much of your anxiety) -most listeners are sympathetic/empathetic to your feelings and needs

  3. Tips: • Your Visual Image-Dress appropriately. • Your Entrance-Act appropriately and confidently. • Your Initial Communication-Pause and look at the audience, smile. • Your Posture-Don’t lean on podium or wiggle around! • Your Movement-Limited and purposeful. • Your Gestures-For support and reinforcement of your verbal message. • Your Facial Communication-EYE CONTACT! and facial animation. • Your Exit-Stay in control! Pause before leaving, and smile.

  4. Vocal Projection (Projection, tone, rate, diction, pronunciation) • Projection (Loudly)-enough to be heard • Tone (Pleasantly)-enough to make your listener glad to listen. • Rate-not too fast or too slow. • Clarity-clearly spoken words—don’t mumble! • Pronunciation-properly pronounced words—if you aren’t sure of the correct pronunciation, look it up or change the word to one you know!

  5. Adequate Preparation: • Your Subject-Consider it! A. Be sure to find sufficient material. B. Be sure the subject is appropriate. C. “Narrow” your subject—get to your point! D. Don’t wait until the last minute-prepare early! E. Make sure your subject isn’t too technical or trivial. F. Make the title of your speech provocative, brief, related to the subject and interesting.

  6. Putting Your Speech Together! • Purpose of speech 1. What do you want to accomplish? 2. What reaction do you want? (Do you want us to understand an idea better? To appreciate something more? To be thankful? To feel honored? To change our minds? To take action?) B. Gather material (give credit to your sources) C. Organize the material (make an outline) D. Carefully word E. Relax!!!

  7. Don’t forget!! • Include visuals besides power-point to enhance presentation. • At the end of your presentation: THANK the JUDGES and ask if they have any questions (they will have questions regardless if you ask them or not).
