  1. Heat Transfer

  2. How is heat transferred?

  3. 3 major types of heat transfer: • Conduction • Convection • Radiation

  4. Radiation: Radiation is the ___PRIMARY_ __WAY_____ heat is transferred that can move through the relative ___EMPTINESS___ of space. The majority of our energy arrives in the form of __RADIATION__ from our Sun. Objects that are good absorbers of radiation are good RADIATORS_ as well. When the Sun heats the Earth, the Earth gets warmer in that location and _RE-RADIATES__ heat into the atmosphere, making it doubly warm.

  5. Popcorn? How do we make popcorn using radiation? The kernels are heated by the radiation in the microwave, and the kernels heat up, giving off more heat to the kernels surrounding it and making it “doubly warm.”

  6. Conduction: • Conduction is HEAT TRANSFER through matter. _METALS__conduct heat well. _AIR___is not as good a conductor of heat. This is a _DIRECT_ _CONTACT type of heat transfer. • The only air heated by the Earth is the air at the _EARTH’S_____ _SURFACE__.As a means of heat transfer, conduction is the _LEAST___ ___SIGNIFICANT________ with regard to heating the Earth’s atmosphere.

  7. Popcorn? How do we make popcorn using Conduction? The heat is transferred by direct contact from the pan – to the oil – to the kernels of popcorn.

  8. Convection: • Convection is _HEAT_____ __TRANSFER__by the movement of mass from one place to another. It can take place only in _LIQUIDS______ and _GASES______. • Heat gained by conduction or radiation from the sun is _MOVED____ about the planet by _CONVECTION__. • The hot air RISES, allowing cooler air to SINK and move in underneath the warm air creating a CIRCULAR movement in a convection current.

  9. Popcorn? How do we make popcorn using Convection? The hot air transfers the heat to the cooler kernels, and when enough hot air heats the kernels they pop.

  10. Review Convection Radiation Conduction

  11. What type of heat transfer is seen in this picture?

  13. What type of heat transfer is seen in this picture?

  14. Finish INB P 67 • draw a picture and label all three types of heat transfer OR • Write a paragraph describing the three types of heat transfer P 68 • Glue in your heat transfer foldable – rank in order from #1-3 the order the earth is heated. #1 the best way the earth is heated.
