  1. LAB SAFETY

  2. Hands-on experiences are essential to learning in science class, but safety must be the first concern! • The following rules exist for your safety. • These rules help to prevent accidents in the lab and allow for more efficient work to occur.

  3. Entering Class • When first entering the room, DO NOT touch any equipment. • Place books, purses, backpacks, and such items in the designated area.

  4. Dress and Medical Conditions • Tie back or remove dangling items, such as jewelry, sleeves, and long hair. • Wear appropriate eye protection. • Let your teacher know if you have any medical conditions that may affect your ability to perform the lab, such as an allergy or injury.

  5. Equipment • Use only materials and equipment authorized by the teacher. • Inform the teacher immediately of any equipment not working properly.

  6. Chemicals • Read all labels on chemical bottles before using. • Keep all containers closed when chemicals are not being used. • Only mix chemicals as directed.

  7. Food and Drinks • Eating or drinking in the laboratory or from laboratory equipment is not permitted. • Do not touch, taste, or smell any chemical unless you are instructed to do so by your teacher.

  8. Accidents • Report any accident to the teacher immediately, no matter how minor. • Know the location of the emergency shower, eyewash, facewash station, fire blanket, fire extinguisher.

  9. Cleaning Up • Dispose of laboratory waste as instructed by the teacher. • Clean up your work area, wash out trays, and replace bottle caps securely. • Return all equipment to its proper place. • Wash your hands after every experiment.

  10. Practice SAFE Science • NO HORSEPLAY! • Failure to comply with safety guidelines will result in removal from the class and loss of credit for the work that is done while you are out of the class!
