  3. Dementia Statistics • In the UK there are approximately, 800,000 people diagnosed with dementia. (Alzheimer’s Society 2012) • Current cost to health and social care £23million and expected to rise to £27million by 2018 (Alzheimer’s Society 2012) • 80% of people living in residential and nursing homes are diagnosed with dementia (Alzheimer’s Society 2013).

  4. Dementia challenges • People with dementia can present health and social care staff with complex problems including aggressive behaviour, restlessness and wandering, eating problems, incontinence, delusions and hallucinations, and mobility difficulties that can lead to falls and fractures.

  5. Managing Dementia challenges • MSF Manual Handling & Back Care can provide 1 day training for care staff: • Identify and understand behaviour • Diffusing behaviour • Understanding restraint/safe interventions • Best interest decisions • Safe and minimal interventions • Keeping safe - breakaway

  6. Dementia Champions/Key Workers • Two day courses. • Key worker will be able to: • Understand and identify behaviours. • Diffuse and manage behaviour. • Demonstrate and lead with safe and minimal interventions. • Demonstrate and lead with best interest decisions. • Undertake risk assessment. • Demonstrate and lead with Breakaway practices

  7. The behaviour model • Follow the ABC approach: • Understanding what is a behaviour • Understanding and identifying the antecedent. • Documenting the behaviour, (hit, grab, verbal) • Managing the consequences • Who was affected.

  8. Understanding restraint • What is restraint? • Should restraint be used are there other ways? • Descelation • Minimal and safe interventions

  9. Legislation • Offences Against the Person Act • Organisational policy • Health and Safety etc Act • Duty of Care and Neglect • Human Rights Act • Mental Capacity Act • Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards

  10. Lawful intervention • Intervention is only lawful if its use is: 1)    Reasonable 2)    Proportionate 3)    Necessary 4)    No more intervention than is necessary in the circumstances Used if threat to people or property

  11. Safe moving and handling • Use appropriate moving and handling equipment. • Do not use a stand aid as a mechanical “drag” lift. • May need to use in-chair sling. • Use of bed rails. • Use of in-bed positioning systems, i.e. Wendy Lett.
