  2. Asteroids • An asteroid is a chunk of rock or metal that orbits the sun within other planets orbit. Sometimes asteroids are thought to be the remains of planets that never formed, and others think that they are parts of planets that broke off when either a meteor or another asteroid hit it. • Size: Asteroids vary in size. They can be the size of pebbles or can be in the hundreds in diameters. • Asteroids are also in the asteroid belt.

  3. TYPES • There are three types of asteroids; C-Carbonaceous, S-Silicates, and M-Types. • C-Carbonaceous: these asteroids are made of ancient silicates. • S-Silicates: these asteroids are made of rocky silicates and iron. • M-Types: these asteroids are made of metals, mostly nickel and iron.

  4. Meteorites • A meteor is a bright streak of light in the sky (a "shooting star" or a "falling star") produced by the entry of a small meteoroid into the Earth's atmosphere. • Meteorites are bits of the solar system that have fallen to the Earth. However, a few have been shown to be pieces of Moon or Mars that were launched into space by an impact event. While moving through space these objects are known as meteoroids. The bright streaks that they produce while moving through Earth's atmosphere are known as a meteors.

  5. Meteors • Any of the small bodies, often remnants of comets, traveling through space: when such a body enters the earth's atmosphere it is heated to luminosity and becomes a meteor Most meteors are like tiny grains of sand. However, the larger ones can be bigger than a baseball. These are usually pieces of broken bits of asteroids or planets.

  6. Quiz • What is an asteroid? • What is a meteor? • What is a meteorite? • What’s the difference?
