Case study: Human rights practices in education that give reason for faith
“I think, “I am here because God wants me to be here.” I think about school and I can’t sleep. I put my hands over my eyes and I pray, “God help me.” The course is like being reborn, but what I don’t know is how to write it. I know the things but not the paper writing. I stop eating. But when someone takes time and explain then I know and it seems okay again.”
Prayer, Oh Lord help us to remember that it’s not just how we succeed that matters but how we serve. Help us to come out of our shells. Thank you for this teacher who shows us there is a god, there is hope; we have reason to have faith.
Student 1: Thank you for breaking for breaking down the words. I understand it in my language but you help me to understand it in palagi. Student 2: It’s not just how you break it down. It’s how you understand us and see the way we think. You make me think of the Minister in the church. The Minister shows love, patience, kindness. This is what you do for us. It’s great to have someone here who comes here like this on the weekend, casual, and who doesn’t take advantage of his role and position. It reminds me of my parents and being with them. Listening to your stories, I feel empowered. We have a role model of someone who can share his life experience and celebrate being Pasifika.
BIG IDEA Human rights practices in education make success-full teaching possible. It is about adaptation and modification not invention.
How to use ‘beautiful’ human rights practices in adult education
When working with educators … Think about retirement or changing jobs • Inspire a sense of higher purpose & contribution • Link accountabilities to strategy and excellent teaching • Explore values
When working with students… • Clarity • Access to intensive support => independence as a learner • Social interaction to enhance peer support
When working within an organisation… Establish a plan for human rights practices - Pasifika expertise at all levels of decision making - Strategic goals that are student centred - Actions and accountabilities - Collaboration and alliances - Evidence-based decision making
