The fellowship program brings talented young Americans along with Indians or ten months to work in the developmental sector in India. The goal of the program is to encourage talented young people to engage their talents for India’s benefit, build ties to India, and assist the partner organizations in increasing their capacity. New Initiatives Indian Fellows AIF has partnered with TISS and DSSW to recruit a pilot batch of 4 Indian Fellows 2 will be co-placed with American Fellows
Timeline of Fellowship Program • May and June: Matching Process in India • July: Endpoint in India • September Fellows Arrive in India, 10 day orientation, Transit to NGOs • October and November: Recruiting in US (and now India) • November and December: Site Visits • New Year’s: Application Deadlines • January: Midpoint Retreat • January and February: Application Selection Process • March and April: Interviews in US and India
Matching Process • Fellows and partner organizations select each other • NGOs provide description of needs via project proposals • Fellows provide areas of interest and expertise • Staff gives NGO and Fellows lists of potential matches, informal interviews occur, and both NGO and Fellow provide ranked preferences
Timeline: Selections and Interviews • Selection Criteria • Graduate Degrees Preferred • Professional Work Experience Preferred • Indian Languages Skills and/or prior experience in India • Diversity of background and/or other development experiences • Maturity, Openness, Cultural Tolerance/Insight, Flexibility, Career Goals Alignment, etc. • Approximately 1 of 4 applicants called to interview, 10% overall selected • Reading and Interview process includes large pool of employees and supporters of AIF, such that selection reflects consensus of those inside and outside of program and AIF itself
