5 Things Teachers Should Know About Integrating Technology in the Classroom.
Intro: Top 10 Reasons to use Technology in education • “If we teach today as we • taught yesterday, we rob • our children of tomorrow.” • -John Dewey • Youtube Video • Article in Print
1. • Technology integration can be used to support both direct and constructivist models.
Direct instruction is usually the most efficient way to convey information or prerequisite skills in a short amount of time. • Computer software can be effective in providing this information at the student’s own pace and is less threatening than teacher-delivered instruction. • Technology based materials can promote automaticity through drill and practice software tailored to the individual student.
The constructivist approach can be addressed by software that provides a highly visual learning experience. This learning experience can provide real-life applications and models to give students true transferable knowledge instead of just inert knowledge obtained in a class lecture.
Software - Word processing / Spreadsheets • Word processing saves time by easily preparing classroom paperwork especially if using the same document (letters to parents, student handouts etc..) • Spreadsheets are especially helpful in math classes as they make calculations faster. A student can notice immediate changes in the solution (even in graph form) by changing some of the data. These effortless calculations allow the student to focus on “deeper learning” from the time saved by not doing the calculations by hand.
3. Support Tools • Integrating these time saving support tools ultimately allows better quality lessons as well as more time for student learning. • Material Generators- whiteboard software to author and display lessons, test generators with answer key (with rubrics) • Electronic Gradebooks- used to efficiently track student progress. • Lesson Planning Software • Online Translation for ELL’s • IEP generators
Using Hypermedia and Support Products • Internet based software is available to enhance in-class instruction through online tutorials, drill and practice, and instructional games. • Students usually show increased motivation when using online activities which can be effective to encourage learning. • In addition, multimedia projects such as video production offers a great way to employ a constructivist approach. Working in groups to create video projects for posting on the web for others to see can increase accountability and quality of work.
Teacher Responsibility • Finally, with the integration of technology in the classroom, it is important to realize that technology does not take the place of the teacher. It is the teacher’s responsibility to know when to effectively implement the technology and what tools and skills will be needed to add to their “Tech Pack”. • “Any teacher that can be replaced by a computer, deserves to be.” David Thornburg
