Muhammad’s Life. 570 ce. Muhammad is born, but both parents die by the time he is six. He is born to the wealthiest tribe in Mecca. His Grandpa (tribe leader) and uncle, Abu Talib , take care of him. There are 360 tribes in Mecca. All worship different gods. . 570-590.

  2. 570 ce • Muhammad is born, but both parents die by the time he is six. • He is born to the wealthiest tribe in Mecca. • His Grandpa (tribe leader) and uncle, Abu Talib, take care of him. • There are 360 tribes in Mecca. All worship different gods.

  3. 570-590 • Muhammad did business with his Uncle the caravan driver. • He was exposed to other cultures and thought Monotheism was the right thing. • Mecca was corrupt to him with many gods and idols.

  4. 590 • LOVE! Muhammad marries Khadijah. • He is 20 and she is 35. • She is a very wealthy business woman. • This allowed him time to go to the hills and meditate and pray.

  5. 610 – Night of Power and Excellence • Angel Gabriel appears to Muhammad and asks him to read. (He reads after three requests.) • Angel Gabriel keeps coming for 23 years and gives him revelations. (These become the Koran –Qu’ran.) • Muhammad tells Mecca, but they hate him and his idea of one God.

  6. 619 – Year of Sorrows • Muhammad’s wife and uncle both die  • This is a problem because Muhammad no longer has protection from his enemies in Mecca. • People hate his one God ideas and want to kill him.

  7. 622 – Night Journey and Ascension (Mi’raj) • Gabriel took Muhammad on a winged horse to Jerusalem and then they ascended to the seven levels of heaven. • Level one –Adam • Level Two- John and Jesus • Level Three –Joseph • Level Four-Enoch (Son of Adam) • Level Five-Aaron (Moses’ brother) • Level Six-Moses • Level Seven-Abraham • Lastly… God was two bow lengths away.

  8. 622- Hijrah (Migration) • Muhammad listened to Gabriel and God and left Mecca. • He went to Medina. • People there listened to him and the religion grew very popular.

  9. 622-630 Wars between Mecca and Medina • Muhammad was offered money, wealth and women to stop talking about one God. • He refused. • The people of Mecca came to kill him.

  10. 3 Battles • Battle one – Mecca sends 1,000 men. Medina wins with 313. • Battle two– Mecca sends 3,000 men and wins. But they just go back home. • Battle three– Mecca sends 10,000 men. Muhammad builds a trench around Medina. Medina wins the battle.

  11. 630 – Pilgrimage to Mecca • Muhammad took 10,000 men and marched to Mecca. • He got rid of the idols in the Ka’bah and rededicated it to God. • He told the people he forgave and told them to go in peace. • He went back home with his 10,000 men to Medina. (People in Mecca became Muslims.)

  12. 632-Last Sermon before he died • 1. One God without images or icons. • 2. Equality of all believers – regardless of class, race, or gender • 3. Sanctity of life • 4. Abolition of private justice • 5. Better treatment of women • 6. Laws about the fairness of wealth
