Neo-Noir Audience & Context
Audience As with any film, one of the most important aspects of a successful film is the audience’s response when viewing. A director will specifically create and enhance certain elements of a film in order to generate certain emotions in the audience.
Audience When it comes to Neo-Noir, there is a recognisable pattern of such audience emotions which are created by Neo-Noir directors, that are typical of the genre. Such emotions usually consist of tension, suspense and excitement. This can be seen in Neo-Noir films such as Memento (2001) and Sin City (2005), as well as the films I have studied in detail: Blade runner (1982) and Brick (2005).
Audience As well as this, Classic Noir used to have a predominantly male target audience, as it would have been considered a male characteristic to possess a gun and to enjoy crime and murder storylines as seen in Noir Narratives. Unlike this, Neo Noir introduces a female target audience through the newly liberated and heroic female characters.
Context The Genre of Neo-Noir is one of the most representative types of film for portraying a complimentary perception of western culture modernity and the anxieties and worries of the modern world. As with classic Noir, the narratives and characters seen in the films often convey such worries through the film to it’s audience.
Context For example, within Blade Runner it could be considered to reflect many modern anxieties about postmodern aspects such as Globalisation, Technology getting out of control as it progresses, and Human Condition, where the very moral fibres which make us human are criticised through the ever-blurring divide between the artificial replicants and the Humans. I
Context Additionally, it could be considered that the conventional femme-fe-tale characters seen in Neo-Noir could be a modern reflection on the ever growing liberation of women, as they become more and more cunning and pivotal to the narratives of the story. Women become more heroic and powerful, unlike during the Classic Noir stages of the 1940s when women’s independence was a fragile and controversial… d
Context Subject, and the films highlighted the anxieties as women were becoming more and more liberated and independent.
Applying The Repertoire of Elements Theory It could be considered that the ‘Repertoire of Elements’ theory could be applied to this aspect of Neo-Noir, as audience response is a subheading within the theory. Neo Noir films such as ‘Looper’ (2012) can select different elements (sweets) from different genre’s (jar’s) which are difference responses and emotions they want the audience to have whilst viewing the film. For example…
Applying The Repertoire of Elements Theory The emotion of tension can be seen in many Thriller films, such as ‘Source Code’( 2011) or ‘Man on a ledge’(2012), however a Neo-Noir director may choose to use this and perhaps a more scared emotion (generically conventional of horror movies such as ‘The exorcist’,1973 and ‘The Conjuring’, 2013 ) and blend such elements into his or her Neo-Noir film. Thus the theory can be applied to films like Blade Runner (1982).
