Organization • Communicate expectations and put in writing “Students don’t like surprises” • Provide clear written instructions of lab content, protocol, and assignments. • Keep grades, graded assignments, and handouts (new and old) organized and easy to access. • Present laboratory material in a clear, well organized, easy to follow format.
"Things should be made as simple as possible, but not any simpler."
Implementation • Talk loud enough for students to hear you • SLOW DOWN! • Look at the students and walk around the room • Learn the names of your students • Never lie. You are not expected to know everything. • Request feedback. • Look for alternative explanations - adapt • Follow through!!!!
Management • “Don’t be everyone’s friend” • Maintain professional atmosphere • Have a sense of humor • Encourage students to problem solve • Seating arrangements and “Group work” • Respond to behavior, not the person • Respect students
