  4. The term “worldview” refers to the priorities and values– the “lens” one uses to view the world. These priorities manifest in the decisions of those in power, especially politicians, via their policy decisions. These last three decades have seen a resurgence of a conservative worldview. Zinnquotes the historian Richard Hofstader’s conclusion that American’s political parties, Democrats and Republicans, have always had a “range of vision… bounded by the horizons of property and enterprise… They have accepted the economic virtues of capitalist culture as necessary qualities of man… That culture has been intensely nationalistic.” The values embraced here are very conservative: capitalist (free-market) and intensely nationalistic (patriotic) which is often used to justify war. While the presidency of democrat Jimmy Carter adhered to (went along with) this worldview, we will see today how Republican presidents Reagan and Bush move the country even deeper into the Conservative worldview. We see this in the presidential elections: In 1980 only 54% of those eligible to vote actually voted. So the winner of that election, Reagan, only got 27% of the voting populations vote. Resisting

  37. Most people expressed concern for their fellow citizens and advocated for things such as raising taxes to care for the poor, health care for all, and a lowering of the military budget.
