What Is A Variable? • A variable is a letter that stands for a # we don’t know.
The Example Problem • Tybria has 61 teddy bears. Kayla has 109 teddy bears. How many more teddy bears does Kayla have than Tybria?
Step One! • Figure out what the problem is asking you to solve. • EXAMPLE FROM THE PROBLEM: How many more teddy bears does Kayla have than Tybria?
Step Two! • List the #’s that are going to be used in your open sentence. • EXAMPLE FROM THE PROBLEM: 61, 109
Step Three! • Figure out the operation that will be used in the open sentence. • EXAMPLE FROM THE PROBLEM: How many more= SUBTRACTION
Step Four! • Write your open-sentence. • EXAMPLE FROM THE PROBLEM: 109-61= A Choose your variable. We chose A!
Step Five! • Write the solution to the open sentence. • EXAMPLE FROM THE PROBLEM: A=48
Step Six! • Write the answer. (Try to use P.Q.A; put the question in the answer) • EXAMPLE FROM THE PROBLEM: Kayla has 48 more teddy bears than Tybria.
