ISOTOPES Key Point #1: Two atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons are called isotopes. We can have more or less neutrons without changing what element we are talking about. Why?
ISOTOPES Key Point #2: Having extra neutrons changes the mass of the element because MASS = #PROTONS + #NEUTRONS My # of protons never changes, but if my neutrons change, so will my mass!
ISOTOPES Key Point #3: Isotope notation lets you know the mass of an element(in case it is different than usual). From there, we can figure out the # of neutrons for that isotope 16 7 OR Nitrogen - 16 Mass Element symbol N Mass Atomic number
