  1. Imflammatory Bowel Disease Sam MacMillan & Dom Cappola

  2. What is it? Is the inflammation in the digestive track (becomes red, swollen) It will affect ability to digest foods and nutrients There are two main types: Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative colitis

  3. Affected Area Crohn’s disease Ulcerative colitis • Any part of the alimentary canal • Mainly intestines • Usually affects the terminal part of the small intestine and the anus • Does not affect any area outside the intestines • Located in the colon (colitis)

  4. Causes of Crohn’s Disease • Exact cause is unknown • Could be influenced by: • Environment • Diet • Blood vessel abnormalities • Theories include • Genetics , it does seem to run in families • Immune system overreacting to a virus or bacterial infection

  5. Diagnosis A very difficult disease to diagnose Physical Exam: -visual examination (pains, aches…etc) Colonoscopy: -endoscope goes through the alimentary canal

  6. Continued Barium X-ray: -swallow chemical -while scientist observe through an X-ray whether or not there is inflammation or narrowing. Blood Tests: -detect anaemia -least invasive -test show C-reactive proteins

  7. Symptoms 3 types: Gastrointestinal—dealing with inner body parts, intestines or stomach Systemic—systems and functioning of the body Extra intestinal—outside of the body's organ’s

  8. Gastrointestinal: Diarrhoea, abdominal pain Vomiting Exhaustion Trouble swallowing Symptoms

  9. Symptoms Systemic: Occurs at a young age Children are unable to grow due to malnutrition can’t absorb nutrients properly Might develop fevers

  10. Symptoms Extra Intestinal: Drastic Weight loss Nausea Constipation

  11. Prevention/Treatment No cure However, you can alter the inflammation to keep them some what controlled: Medication Physical Changes Surgery– only when there is a blockade in the intestine

  12. Ulcerative Colitis

  13. Causes of Ulcerative Colitis The cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown. People with this condition have problems with the immune system Stress and certain foods can trigger symptoms, but they do not cause ulcerative colitis.

  14. Symptoms Abdominal pain and cramping or abdominal sounds (gurgling etc.) Rectal pain Frequent or sporadic Diarrhea Nausea and vomiting Weight loss also may be a symptom

  15. Diagnosis Colonoscopy is often used to diagnose Physical exam also used Fairly easy to diagnose if symptoms are present

  16. Treatment Patient can be treated with anything from a change in diet to surgery For more severe cases medication is often prescribed If medication does not work surgery can be carried out
