MesoWest Facts • 2600 stations from over 70 participating organizations available in the West • Data processed & quality controlled & graphical products generated every 15 minutes • Still transitioning to new database • Typically, 15-30 minute time delay, e.g., observation at top of hour available at 15-30 minutes past hour • Available in AWIPS & FX-Net but more info available via Internet www.met.utah.edu/mesowest
Monitoring Weather Conditions for the 2002 Winter Olympics • 27 automated weather stations at • 5 outdoor venues • Manual reports from weather aides at outdoor venues • Weather stations near 9 other key Olympic locations • Over 250 weather stations in northwest Utah • Roughly 70 stations polled by SLC NWSFO www.met.utah.edu/mesowest

ADAS is a tool to monitor current conditions based upon MesoWest surface observations Uses NCEP RUC2 analysis from previous hour as background field to define overall spatial structure Background field interpolated to high resolution grid (10 km or 1 km) Observations are used to correct background field Current Utah versions of ADAS 2D surface analyses at 10km resolution over western U.S. every 15 minutes Available 45 min after valid time In AWIPS; FX-NET 2D surface analyses at 1km resolution over northwest Utah every 15 minutes Available 45 min after valid time AWIPS?; FX-NET? 3D analyses at 1km resolution over northwest Utah every hour Available +1:30 after valid time AWIPS?; FX-NET? Automated Observations • All Temp, RH, wind sensors currently pass QC tests but many affected by siting • Wind sensors at most sites with precip gauges are NOT representative of general conditions • Acoustic snow depth sensors used for: (1) total snow & (2) interval snow • SWE is the hardest variable to measure and process automatically:Seven different types of automated precipitation gauges in northern Utah • Geonor/Belfort (accumulating) and ETI sensors (event) precip gauges at Outdoor venues Precipitation during IPEX: Feb 2000 • Reliable communication to automated stations remains an issue • dedicated phone lines • radio • cell phones www.met.utah.edu/mesowest
