Lab 2 Lenses & Telescope Physics 1404 Solar System and The Sky
Telescope -Invention • Credited to two Dutch opticians in 1608: • Hans Lippershey Zacharias Jansen Credited with the patent
Telescope • Composed to two lenses, one in the front (Objective Lens) and one in the rear (eyepiece lens) with hollow tube in between.
Astronomical Telescope Galileo Galilei, Italian 1564-1642 Galileo Constructed his improved telescope in Summer of 1609
The Astronomical Telescope • Galileo was the first to use the telescope for astronomical uses. • First to see craters on the Moon, July 1609 • First to see Jupiter and its moon, October 1609. • Discovered phases of terrestial planets which lead to his theory of heliocentric solar system which put him in conflict with the Catholic Church that viewed the geocentric solar system was correct.
Types of LensShape determines Function • Function-Converging-to point –Image Diverging-away-No Image • Shape-Convex-Converging Concave-Diverging
The Lens -Refraction • Curved surface glass bents incoming light due to decrease in speed of light moving into a denser medium toward a point called a focal point where an image is formed.
Mirrors? • Issac Newton was knowledgeable in refraction; his theory was that white light was composed all the colors of light. • He also knew the principles of reflection. • He found that curved mirrors can form images like a lens. Issac Newton, English 1642-1726
The NEWTONIAN Reflecting Telescope Focus moved to avoid obstruction to the side. Secondary (flat) Mirror Primary (Curved) Mirror
Telescope Mounts I • Altitude-Azimuth (Alt-Az) Mount-Up and Down & Side to Side.
Telescope Mounts II • The German Equatorial Mount-Adjustable altitude and free azimuth.
Telescope Mounts III • The Dobsonian or Dob Mount (John Dobson) for amateurs. • It is a Altitude- Azimuth Mount
Combination: Lens and Mirrors • The Schimdt-Cassegrain Telescope has both lens and mirrors. Hole in Primary Mirror Partial curved Lens-Corrector Eye Piece Lens Secondary Mirror (Curved) Primary Mirror(curved)
