Institutional Report – University of Plovdiv ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ Module Transformation ModuleTitle: Active Teaching Strategies in Primary Science Education Time spent transferring it to an e-environment: Translation and adaptation from English paper version to Bulgarian and English e-environment took 18 months.It was finished at the end of Aug 2008.

Four distance sessions occurred since 8 of Nov 2008) Materials – Power Point Presentations, Adobe Acrobat documents, Photos, Pictures, Games The gateway questionnaire has been completed. Written teachers’ instructions supplied during the meetings with the participating teachers. Languages of dissemination – Bulgarian and English Moodle web address - http://cc-crie.dte.ua.pt/moodle/ Accreditation at national level - Pending

Institutional Report – University of Plovdiv ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ • Teachers' Motivation: • To meet with colleagues, share and exchange teaching skills, opinions and ideas • To expand their theoretical knowledge • To learn new practical skills • To improve their computer skills • To compare their observations, resulting from the application of different methodological approaches, to those of their colleague • To compare their skills and knowledge to those of other colleagues • To improve their communication skills as a result of taking part in these meetings • To feel professional satisfaction and to strive towards constant professional improvement

  4. Institutional Report – University of Plovdiv ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ Modules Implementation Pilot started on 01/09/2008 and is still in progress. We plan to finish it till the end of January 2009. Number of participants – teachers 8: students – 232

  5. Institutional Report – University of Plovdiv ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ Results - Problems reported: Opening Power Point session files: The Internet connection in teachers’ homes is low speed. This problem could be solved with Broadband connections made available. Portfolio submission issues: A step-by-step user’s guide would be of great help. Putting one together is necessary. Positive outcomes: The design and terminology of the sessions are very well accepted. The teacher’s response is positive. They show competence managing the tasks and show progress with the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and using the web-based environment.

Institutional Report – University of Plovdiv ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ Results: • Increased interest towards web-based tasks resulting in improved computer skills     • Taking part in the Forum prompts questions and engages the participants in discussions  • The possibility of raising questions which, although not included in the current discussions, have indirect impact on the teaching process. The number of issues and topics discussed increases.      • Adds to and improves the  teaching skills of the participants; improves their theoretical and practical work in the classroom    • Encourages communication amongst teachers. The Internet forum allows discussions, exchange of ideas and experiences at times convenient for the individual - No prior arrangements necessary.       • Encourages work with project partners, as well as a desire for co-operation on a project or task of mutual interest Note: Future work: After the pilot, if necessary, some changes might take place.

Institutional Report – University of Plovdiv ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ Dissemination • The project and module have been presented at four meetings with teachers in the region of Plovdiv • Outcomes: Introducing the project; Motivate teachers to participate in e-learning module training; Moodle User Instruction (Sept 2007 – Sept 2008) • One articles submitted to a Bulgarian professional teaching periodical. • The project and Bulgarian module have been presented to the Ministry of Education during the meeting with the Head inspector for Primary education. • Institutional web-site (http://pedagogy.uni-plovdiv.bg/). The information will be there in December 2008.
