History Three Major Historical Facts: • The African country was named Dahomey in the 15th century. • Benin was part of the African Slave Trade- slaves were traded between Africa, Europe, and America between 16th – 18th centuries • Benin became a French colony and formed a Socialist type of government at one time.

  3. History • The colonial power that ruled Benin was France.

  4. History • Benin achieved its independence through war. • Gained independence August 1, 1960

  5. History: Hubert Coutoucou Maga • Born in mid August 1916 in Parakou, Dahomey • He grew up in villages and towns in his hometown • He was a moderate political activist, nationalist, and first president of Dahomey • In 1951, he was elected to the Chambers of Deputies of the French National Assembly • He died on May 8, 2000 in Cotonou, Benin

  6. Culture Prominent Tribes: • Fon – the largest tribe in Benin • Asja and Aizo – lives in the South and are mostly farmers • Goun – live in the Porto-Novo area • Yoriba – from Nigeria • Somba – lives in the Northeast

  7. Culture • The musical instruments of Benin are sticks, drums, and thumbed pianos

  8. Culture • Traditional food - “stew” or “soup” ( a tomato-based sauce that includes many different vegetables and meat.) It is served with rice or spaghetti noodles. • Breakfast- bread, oatmeal, cereal, and chocolate drinks such as Bournvita or Milo. • Many fast foods – ex. Mr. Biggs

  9. Religion • Major Religions – Muslim, Vodoun, Celestial, and Christianity

Religion • Muslim- a monotheistic religion that follows practices based off Qur’an • Vodoun- an indigneous organized religion of coastal West Africa • Celestial- a scientific religion of three heavenly kingdoms in Mormon theology • Christianity- followers of this religion believe in one God Jesus who came and died for our sins

Religion-Unique Aspect • Muslim- They fast off food during a time called Ramadian • Vodoun- create different types of dolls and worship them • Celestial- uses many different types of science equipment • Christianity- followers of this religion go to a church ceremony every Sunday to worship Jesus

Religion How it’s practiced in the U.S. • Muslim- They pray daily and they give a pilgrimage to Mecca at least once • Vodoun- they create animistive figures that they worship • Celestial- they talk to there four different gods daily • Christianity- they pray daily and praise there one God every day.

  13. Economy • Main Industries- textile mills, construction materials, food process industry, and cement factories.

  14. Economy • Agricultural Crops- manoie, yams, corn, beans, rice, sweet potatoes, and etc.

  15. Economy • Natural Resources- oil, limestone, and limber

  16. Economy • The United States GDP is 7.329 billion in 2010. Benin’s GDP in 2010 is 6.649. This record shows that Benin’s GDP was lower than the United States.
