Today’s goal • To Negotiate the syllabus through a series of discussions • To audio-record the discussions for later analysis (Due on 10/1) • To try out some discussion strategies consciously
Discussion 1 • Get into groups of 2-3, • Noi, Paula • Xuejiao, Anni • Song, Suangfeng, Esther • Su Jin, Steve • Taeko, Masae, Ikue • Share your opinions without showing your notes, • Decide on 3 sections (=Part 2, Part 3, etc.) • Audio-record and take notes during the discussion • Note: Use the first language you share if possible. The goal of this discussion is to later analyze your discussion skills in a more competent language.
Reporting on a Group Discussion 1 • Go back to the class, • Each group report on the discussion, • Others take notes • Ask clarification questions, if necessary • Later, you will form different groups to choose 10 sections.

Discussion 2 • Form new pairs • Shuangfeng, Noi • Xiujiao, Su Jin • Song, Taeko • Anni, Steve • Esther, Masae • Paula, Ikue • Propose ten sections to be covered during the semester • Note: Refer to the reasons other students have given. Do you agree with their ideas, or disagree? • Don’t forget to record your discussion and to keep records. • Submit the record of your discussion at the end of this class.
Homework • We will start Chapter 1 of Quest. • Before practice listening about shamanism, prepare yourself by doing the following homework: • Part 1, A. B. C. D (Write down your answers) • Part 2, B. • Listen to the recordings, and jot down the expressions you used & their functions (e.g., That’s exactly what I was thinking of: agreeing without reservation) —This is due on Friday
